How Thyroid Disease and Other Conditions Impact the Skin

As the hormonal regulator of our bodies, the endocrine system influences many other biological systems and processes, including circulatory system functions, cellular growth and regeneration, and reproduction. The skin is no exception, and endocrine disorders can also significantly impact cutaneous health. When endocrine disorders are present, there may be an apparent dermatologic response. Even the presence of acne, often considered harmless, is associated with increased insulin resistance, higher mean and systolic blood pressure levels, and higher mean fasting plasma glucose levels.

In this sense, the skin can sometimes provide a window into a potential underlying endocrine disorder, such as thyroid disease. Understanding the relationship between the endocrine system and the skin can help clinicians better detect and treat both endocrine related and cutaneous manifestations of these disorders.
